CLYDE COASTGUARD COORDINATE RESCUE OF CREW FROM SINKING FISHING VESSEL

CLYDE COASTGUARD COORDINATE RESCUE OF CREW FROM SINKING FISHING VESSEL

London, 13 September/GNN/ --

MARITIME AND COASTGUARD AGENCY News Release (Press Notice No: 352) issued
by the Government News Network on 13 September 2005
At 1.45pm Clyde Coastguard were contacted by mobile phone by the skipper of
the fishing vessel Jeniver, reporting they were taking in water and had lost
electric power so could not use their VHF radio. The skipper was only able
to give an estimated position between the Isle of Arran and the Ayrshire
coast and informed the Coastguard that they would have to abandon ship.

Clyde Coastguard scrambled the Royal Naval Rescue Helicopter from Prestwick
and the Troon RNLI lifeboat. Once the rescue helicopter was in the area,
Clyde Coastguard instructed the crew, now in a life raft, to fire a red
parachute flare to help the helicopter locate them in the water. The rescue
helicopter found the life raft and winched the two men on board. The crew
of the helicopter confirmed that the fishing vessel Jeniver had sunk.

Shortly afterwards, the Troon lifeboat was also on scene and managed to
recover the drifting life raft.

The Jeniver was a 30 foot fishing trawler registered in Oban which had been
fishing in the area today with two crew on board. The life raft and the
sinking vessel were located approximately half way between the Island of
Arran and the Ayrshire coast, South West of Troon.

Weather conditions on scene were South Westerly force 7 (near Gale Force)
with a sea swell of between 2 - 3 metres.

Clyde Coastguard Watch Manager Peter Stewart says,

"In this incident the prompt action taken by crew ensured a rapid response when
they realised they were in difficulty and contacted the Coastguard quickly.
This avoided the need for risking life even further by getting into the
water and we are pleased to report a successful outcome for the rescue."
